Jeanine Pohlhaus Photography

I  began my journey  as a documentary photographer in NYC. I worked as a journalist and photo editor and was fortunate to travel across the country and abroad.

When I was photographing my father and family in “Joan and Ernie” It was through the eyes of a daughter and observer. I stayed with my parents to support them and the pictures evolved, the camera was a temporary shield and the pictures opened a dialog about the stigma of having a mental illness.

Now, as the full-time caregiver  for my mother Joan, my range is close to home.

While these images may not seem to go together or have something in common, they do.

My photographs are about finding humor and beauty in the moments whether it be in my dogs expression or an exchange with my mother as I help her get ready for her day.

During the pandemic I began taking pictures of flowers. I craved to be outside as a release from the darkness and to take a break from caregiving. The botanical photos are a result of this time. They are meditations of color and my escape to the beauty of nature.

Sometimes we need to take a breath to see and appreciate what is right in front of our eyes.
